Sant Martí d'Empúries

It is a dependent neighborhood of L'Escala, preserved as a medieval village. In the past, it had been a peninsula and welcomed the first inhabitants from the 9th century BC. Three centuries later, it established commercial relations with the Phoenicians, Punics and Phocians of Massalia, which was the beginning of the negotiations that made Empúries one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean. Since then, Sant Martí d'Empúries has always been inhabited continuously.

Until 1064, Sant Martí was the seat of the county of Empúries. A good part of the medieval wall is preserved. The church of Sant Martí was built in 1538, on the pre-Romanesque temple of the year 926. In contrast to the medieval character of the town, in Sant Martí we find the Casa Forestal, in modernist style, currently the headquarters of the Iberia Graeca foundation. Right in front are the remains of the old castle, which inspired Victor Mora, creator of the comic strip Captain Thunder, to be the home of the hero.

It is worth walking through the narrow streets of Sant Martí. In the Plaça Major we find several restaurants that offer interesting gastronomic proposals. Once you have visited this town, it is also highly recommended to walk along the Empúries promenade, which connects Sant Martí with the town of L'Escala. It is a couple of kilometres that allows you to discover the beaches of Empúries, pass right by the Greco-Roman site of Empúries and see the old Moll Grec.
